She's a Beauty - Lindsborg couple restores former fraternity house and pizza parlor into an award-winning bed and breakfast.

Lindsborg - Stepping into the Rosberg House Bed and Breakfast is like taking a time machine back to the 19th century.

Master Suite

David and Sabrina Spellman - Owners/Innkeepers

Guests at the renovated and refurbished Victorian Queen Anne house at 103 E. State have their choice of five rooms, each with its own theme.  honeymooners and anniversary couples can bask in romance in the luxurious Turret Suite; weary business travelers can enjoy the comfort of the spacious Master Suite with whirlpool tub and king-size four-poster bed; and history buffs can immerse themselves in Civil War memorabilia in the Lincoln Room.

The three-story house was built in 1885 by Swedish immigrant Carl Victor Rosberg, a Lindsborg furniture dealer and mortician.  It since has been transformed into everything from a fraternity house to a pizza parlor, but for the past eight years, it has been the dream project of Sabrina and David Spellman.

After purchasing the property in January 1996, the couple spent four and a half years turning the then-deteriorating structure into a bed and breakfast that would provide a combination of historical elegance and modern comfort.  With the help of Sabrina's father, Jerry Gillgannon, who did most of the woodwork and carpentry, and several of her willing uncles, Rosberg House was ready to open in June 1999.

"We knew it was going to take a lot of work to refurbish, but we didn't know it would take that long," Sabrina said.  "But we're happy the way it all turned out.  It's been very well received."

This was proved last September when Rosberg House was voted one of the top 15 bed and breakfasts in the country in Arrington's Bed and Breakfast Journal's 2003 Book of Lists.  It also was a winner in the same journal for "Best Interior Design and Decor."

Arrington's Bed and Breakfast Journal is a national monthly trade publication for members of the Bed and Breakfast/Country Inn industry.  Rosberg House was awarded the honor after votes were tabulated from guests who had stayed there during 2002.

"It's nice all the work we put into it was awarded, and we're thankful to all the guests who voted for us," Sabrina said.

"I think the biggest reason we got the award is that I stayed out of my wife's way when she was designing the place," David said with a laugh.

Different experiences
Although all the rooms are furnished in a classic Victorian style, each is designed to give guests a unique experience, Sabrina said.

"We wanted to create an elegant Victorian atmosphere but with all the modern-day conveniences like showers and television," she said.

The Master Suite on the main floor features a king-size canopy four-poster bed, a private sitting room with fireplace and a private bath with a whirlpool tub for two.  On the second floor, the Lincoln Room contains a queen-size sleigh bed, washing stand, whirlpool for two and Civil War flags, books, statues, documents and pictures.  David, a lifelong Civil War buff, admitted he made a large contribution to the layout of this particular room.

"I had a lot of Civil War stuff and no place to put anything, so we decided to design this room," he said.

Also on the second floor is the Turret Suite (or bridal suite), designed for honeymoon and anniversary couples, with a queen-size four-poster bed, fireplace, sitting room and whirlpool for two.

It also has a private entrance with a balcony and spiral staircase that leads to a small swimming pool in the back yard that is open to all guests.

Sabrina also has placed family wedding pictures on the walls of the Turret Suite, including her own, along with her and her mother's wedding dresses.

On the third floor is the Heritage Room, designed with a Swedish theme, that has a view of downtown Lindsborg.  A small corner room is dubbed O'Gilley's Room and is designed in Irish green and decorative shamrocks and leprechauns.
"This room is named after my dad - Gilley is his nickname," Sabrina said.  "My dad spent so much time renovating here that we decided to name a room after him."
Breakfast is served at one of the several downstairs dining rooms or privately in a room if requested.  A typical meal might include eggs, a choice of meats and the house specialty - French Toast Sundae, a grilled French bread topped with fresh fruit, strawberry sauce, nuts, whipped cream and a cherry.
Breakfast is served anytime a guest requests it, and some business people have requested it very early, David said.
"We've served breakfast at 4:30 in the morning," he said.  "Sometimes guests are surprised at this, but we always try to give people more than they expect.  We want to provide exceptional service they can't get anywhere else."
"You do what your customers want instead of what you want," Sabrina said.  "We'll serve them in their rooms, outside on the porches if the weather is nice or wherever else they want to be served."
The Spellmans live in the basement, which they have renovated into self-contained living quarters so guests can have more privacy in the house.  Telephones are in each room if guests need assistance, but David said he and Sabrina try to leave them alone as much as possible.
"We give them a tour and show them where everything is, including the kitchen," David said.  "Then we just try to stay out of their way and let them enjoy themselves."
